Are you one of the unfortunate people still using Windows 10? So be careful because Microsoft has confirmed the permanent end of support for Windows 10 for the month of October 2025. And this could transform millions of computers into real malware sieves!
Imagine that according to a recent ESET study, no less than 32 million computers in Germany are still running under Windows 10. We are talking about 65% of the IT fleet German homes!
The situation is similar across Europe. In Austria, 63% of users are concerned, while in Switzerland it is 56%. In total, more than 35 million machines in the DACH zone (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) are in the crosshairs and I think that in France, we must be around that too…
Globally, the numbers are just as worrying: according to StatCounter, nearly 63% of Windows users still use version 10, compared to only 34% for Windows 11.
And at Steam, +42% of players are still on Windows 10… gulps!
Thorsten Urbanski, security expert at ESET, is therefore sounding the alarm because this transition promises to be much more perilous than that of Windows 7. At the time, 70% of users had already migrated to Windows 10 before the end of support but today, only 33% of machines are running on Windows 11 and it's not necessary to have helped you with my tutorials.
The solution recommended by Microsoft is obviously the update but be careful, your hardware must be compatible.
The famous TPM 2.0 module is mandatory and non-negotiable according to Microsoft, as it is essential for many security features like storing cryptographic keys and protecting credentials. Then there are workarounds…
Microsoft is also offering extended support, but at what cost… For businesses: $61 the first year, $122 the second, $244 the third (total of $427 over 3 years) per PC.
And for individuals it will be 30$ per machine for one year.
So there are several options available to you if you can't update to Windows 11. First of all, you can finally make your dream come true, namely switch to Linux. Perfect for bringing an old computer back to life, with most common software available (LibreOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, VLC…). Otherwise, there is also ChromeOS Flexjust to change prison. This allows you to transform your PC into a Chromebook.
And otherwise, you will have to invest in new equipment to benefit from Windows 11 on a modern machine.
No choice because without security updates, your computer will quickly become vulnerable to ransomware attacksof data theft personal, espionage industry, malware infections – but also compatibility issues with new software and peripherals.
In short, time is running out, but don't panic! The important thing is to anticipate and plan your transition. Whether you opt for Windows 11, Linux or another solution, the main thing is not to stay on Windows 10 after October 2025 because your digital security depends on it! In any case, if new options emerge between now and then, count on me to tell you about them.
