You do not imagine the joy that invades me by writing this article because as an unconditional fan of Simcity 2000 Since my college years (and yes, it does not rejuvenate me), I have excellent news to announce to you: the developer Araxestroy has just created SC2KFIXa magic DLL that allows you to run Simcity 2000 special edition perfectly on modern windows. It is to wonder why I have not yet become mayor of my patelin with all these hours spent building virtual cities! 😄

If like me you have already tried to relaunch Simcity 2000 on your recent PC, you have surely encountered two major problems:

  1. THE animations are completely frozen : The lights no longer flash, the water no longer moves & mldr; In short, your city looks like a photo rather than a living metropolis.
  2. And the game tends to Plant when using dialogue boxes safeguard/loading. And there is nothing more frustrating than losing your game because of a simple bug!

The developer Araxestroy has therefore created a particularly elegant solution. Rather than modifying the executable of the game (which often poses compatibility problems), it has developed a DLL which is responsible for memory and corrects the bugs on the fly. It’s clean, it’s elegant, and above all it works!

The principle is simple:

  1. You download the file Winmm.dll Since the latest version on GitHub
  2. You copy this file in the same folder as your Simcity.exe
  3. You warn your friends, colleagues and families that you will disappear for several hours
  4. And you launch the game

And that’s it! If the lights on the starter screen are animated, it is that everything is working properly.

The DLL provides several major improvements:

  • Restoration of entertainment by palette : Animations based on palette swapping (typical technique of the 90s) work perfectly
  • Crash correction : More crash when using backup/loading dialog boxes
  • High resolutions support : The game now runs perfectly even on modern screens
  • Deletion of unnecessary warnings : More annoying message regarding 256 colors mode

And for the devices that read me, here is how magic works under the hood. The DLL uses two main techniques:

  1. Code injection in memory : Instead of modifying the .exe file, SC2KFIX injects its corrections directly into the memory of the process at startup.
  2. Redirection of system calls : The DLL intercepts certain Windows calls and modifies them to restore the original behavior of the game.

Before Sc2kfix, the main solution was Sc2krepainter de Guspaz. Although functional, this approach had some side effects such as a forced refresh from the whole window, the disappearance of prices during the Drag & Drop and less optimal performance.

In short, as an inveterate player of Simcity 2000, I can tell you that this correction completely changes the gaming experience. See again the animations operate as in the great era of the release of the game, it’s just too Cooool . And by the way, having better stability is also a huge plus. No need to save its part its part every 2 minutes like a wild!
