My little flakes of love snow, you will be joy because I just came across a pure nugget that smells good the 90s! Well yes because if like me you spent hours on skifree at the time of Windows 3.1 (and to flee this damn Yeti), you will love Retroskia new independent ski game that will remind you of the beautiful era when everything was prettier in Pixel Art.
Coded with passion by Mat, a long -standing reader (thanks to you!) Who could not find a ski game “Easy to Learn, hard to master” To put oneself under the tooth, Retroski offers a sliding experience which gives pride of place to gameplay and the challenge.
Put on your most beautiful Fluo Combi, we go to test the tracks together!
- Slalom for lovers of tight turns
- The giant for a more flowed rhythm
- The super-G for speed addicts
- The descent for the burned heads
Each discipline has its own levels of track generation, which directly influences the gameplay and the trajectory to adopt. Beginners will therefore start with the giant history of getting hands, before going to more technical disciplines.
And unlike certain modern games that drown you under complex mechanics, Retroski focuses on the essentials, namely precise control and well thought out. A simple press on your keyboard is enough to start hitting the slope, then you will then have to be finesse to chain the doors in style.
The game incorporates a system of race dynamics Who rewards the beautiful trajectories and punishes technical errors and the more you train, the more you will feel the difference in your driving. It’s super gratifying!
And because nothing beats a good ski session between Potos, Retroski offers several multiplayer game modes:
Be locally Where you create your own tracks from A to Z to then challenge your friends in a single race or in the championship. And that up to 10 rides in a row for wild evenings!
Either online To face skiers around the world and compare your time on global rankings. Of course, you can share your most beautiful runs with the community
And to perfect the experience, Retroski also offers a whole bunch of options to hack in parameters such as the choice of the sound atmosphere which allows you to ski or not in music, a ghost mode to face your best times or those of the world champions and also additional decorations for the decor or the refining of visual effects to gain perfs.
In short, many small details well managed in this game, which makes it a real author’s pleasure more than Retroski is a project open source ! The code is available on Github for the curious who would like to take a look under the hood or contribute to development.
Here, Retroski proves that with good ideas and a lot of passion, we can create a simple but terribly addictive game. Congratulations to Mat for this superb creation which gives us back in our snowy gaming memories! 🎿
