The opportunity for me to tell you about this citizen initiative which to promote European technological alternatives has managed to unite, in just 1 month, more 150,000 users on Reddit And to index more than 1,000 products and services made in Europe.

It all started on February 16, when some web rebels created the Subreddit R/Buyfromeu. A week later, on February 23, the online directory was already operational. And boom! On February 25, the community already crossed the 50,000 members. Today, more than 150,000 users actively participate in this movement. Not bad for something that didn’t even exist a month ago, right?

Behind this project, there are around 60 volunteers who have mobilized like small ants to manually index this thousand products and services.

This is called “Go European”, And it is a project that could well rebathe the cards of our digital consumption if you play the game. It is as I told you, an online directory but also extensions for browsers (Firefox And Chromium), which offer you for each American service, an alternative of European origin.

I installed the extension on Firefox and it is stunning with simplicity. Once activated, it informs you when you visit a non-European site by a small popup and offers you European alternatives. No headache, no complex configuration, just enough.

For example :

  • Proton mail vs gmail
  • Microsoft Office VS Onlyoffice
  • NextCloud vs Google Drive/Dropbox

The GoEuropean.org website has already recorded more than 56,000 visits in a few weeks and it is crazy when you know that the project is entirely community and that there is not a marketing budget kopeck behind!

Something to say that you are not so bad in Europe and feel like a digital resistant in front of the Empire on the dark side! Now, beyond economic patriotism, Go European asks a real question: Can we build a digital ecosystem that corresponds to our European values?

It is not won because the alternatives are not always up to expectations but when we see the success of the site, I tell myself that there is a real request and that it does not lack much to get there!

If European developers play the game and users follow, we could have in a few years a real ecosystem made in Eu which holds up. And with all our RGPD standards and our obsessions for privacy (not so crazy as that), we may have a real card to play.
