I’m more team Nintendoas you know & mldr; It’s historic because I started on the NES, the Super Nintendo, the Game Boy, then the Wii and now the Switch. Nor are you without knowing that the Mode 7 From the Super Nintendo, this technique of rotating and scaling back funds which made F-Zero and Mario Kart so impressive in 1991, was one of the fatal weapons of Nintendo against Sega. What could I bleed these 2 games by the way & mldr;

But I do not forget the wealthy rages that you are who grew up under the Sega pavilion because I have excellent news for you! A developer named Gasega68k decided to achieve the unthinkable: Porter F-Zero with the same cool effects, on Megadrive.

This heresy is called G-Zero and it is entirely compatible with the original equipment via a Everdrive (the famous cartridge allowing Roma to be loaded on original consoles). To succeed in this feat, the developer used a technique similar to Nintendo’s “7” mode to create a background rotation effect and offers G-Zero in 2 versions. One test that can mount up to 15 cars and a normal version limited to 5 cars.

As I told you in intro, mode 7 was one of the great advantages of SNES, allowing rotations and zooms on whole funds thanks to specific material capacities. The Mega Drive did not have this native capacity, which has long limited the types of possible visual effects on the Sega console. What Gasega68k has achieved here is to force the Mega Drive to do something for which she was not designed.

The current gameplay of G-Zero is quite basic since it is simply an endless loop circuit, with update of the best time after each round but technically, it is impressive to see.

Ah if only Sega had managed to do this at the time, it would have changed a lot, who knows? Sonic Racing might have crushed Mario Kart and we would all live in a parallel world where the Dreamcast 5 has just been released.

G-Zero is part of a broader movement of HomeBrew development on vintage consoles which continues to grow. Passionate people postpone the limits of aged 30 years old, proving that we can always innovate even with important technical constraints. Recent titles like Xeno Crisis,, Tanglewood Or Paprium have already shown that the Mega Drive still had secrets to reveal.

This G-Zero project is still in development, but it already has enormous potential. To believe that the Sega vs Nintendo war continues in 2025 through these independent developers & MLDR;

Now, if you want to try G-Zero:

  1. Download the .7z file on itch.io
  2. Extract the archive
  3. Choose between version 5 or 15 cars
  4. And use a Mega Drive emulator (like Kega Fusion) or a real console with Everdrive

The game can be downloaded at free prices, which means that you can recover it for free or support the developer by giving the amount of your choice. Personally, I find that it is well worth a few euros for the technical effort made.

Have fun, whether you are Team Nintendo or Team Sega! And if you are Team Playstation, sorry, but this article was not for you because you are too young (although, someone would be able to wear G-Zero on PS1 now & mldr;).
