Hello friends!
Today, I offer you a little video comparison (watch below) between Cursor And Windsurfingtwo AI IDE (dev environment) which will help you code any of your projects from A to Z. The video was filmed a few weeks ago, and since then, there have been quite a few updates. We might as well tell you that things move very (very) quickly, and that forming a fixed opinion on these two tools is sometimes a feat… So it's better to try them yourself to form your own opinion!
Cursor vs Windsurf: the main points
In the video, I show you how to code a little Tetris in HTML/CSS/JS using these two environments. AI-assisted development. The idea is to see how everyone manages file creation, code generation, testing (TDD), debugging, etc.
- Cursor : A IDE based on Visual Studio Code which integrates a chat and code generation system (Composer). You can plug in the models you want (OpenAI, Claude, etc.) and work in Agent or normal mode. The tool offers a free plan to get started, as well as paid offers (with more credits and faster queries).
- Windsurfing : developed by the Codeium team, it also takes the “VS Code + AI” approach, with its own features (notably the Cascade model). In terms of prices, we are on something quite close, with free and paid plans.
Both are doing the job, and their evolution is so rapid that we barely have time to turn around before seeing a new feature appear!
The strong points and the small minuses
- Cursor : clear interface, a very practical “Composer” to generate files automatically, and the possibility of using your own API keys. Its Agent mode is rather robust and the tool is becoming more and more complete (bug finder, version rollback, etc.).
- Windsurfing : more “turnkey”. AI does almost everything on its own, including unit testing and code generation. It can happen, like Cursor, to make small balls, but both AI IDE remain generally reliable.
In the end, the two are getting off on each other and offer super close approaches. Today, making a definitive comparison is complicated, because they are constantly integrating new features. A tip: test them both and see which one suits you best!
What do we code with that?
In the video, I show a funny example (a Tetris), but know that you can code almost everything: WordPress plugins, browser extensionsserver scripts, Node or Python projects… It's no limit, provided you structure your projects well (specifications, TDD, etc.). The clearer you are in your instructions, the more relevant code the AI provides.
Merry Christmas and see you soon on Patreon!
There you go, I hope that this article has made you want to test these tools.AI IDE by yourself. As I said, they are constantly updating, so don't hesitate to try them again if you weren't convinced the first time. And if you want to go further, I talk about all this on Patreon : prompts, articles, tutorials… so come support me on patreon.com/korben !
On this, I wish you a Merry Christmas and see you soon for new adventures!
